The Pacific Division of AAAS is pleased to announce its 98th annual meeting, to be held on the campus of the Hawai`i Preparatory Academy, 19 – 23 June 2017. We are also pleased to announce that once again the Northwest and Southwest Regions of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, will be joining us. Membership in AAAS or its affiliated societies is not required to participate in or present research at the meeting.

All scientists, including graduate and undergraduate students, are invited to present their research results at the meeting, either orally or as posters. Persons paying the registration fee may attend all scientific sessions as well as participate in many other activities. Field trips require advance registration and payment of additional fees.

The theme for this year's meeting is "Pacific Science." Pacific Science is particularly relevant for this meeting of the Pacific Division of AAAS, as Hawai`i sits in the middle of the Pacific Ocean but topics of the meeting include many other Pacific areas, including the Galapagós Islands. It is our hope that as one reflects on the science presented at this meeting in the midst of this lush, tropical paradise, thoughts will also include how these topics impact humanity in general, both in the minds of those doing and teaching about scientific research as well as those of the public at large as it brushes up against the humanities and continues to percolate into the social consciousness of the citizenry.

Returning for the meeting this year is the Division's Second Annual Maker Exhibit, an exhibit of all of those wonderful maker projects that are being assembled by so many folks in order to solve a variety of challenges and problems. Meeting Rooms

This year's technical sessions will be held on the campus of the Hawai`i Preparatory Academy in Waimea (Kamuela), Hawai1i. All meeting rooms will be equipped with computers running PowerPoint and computer projectors. Speakers requiring other equipment must make their requests known at the time of abstract submission. Such equipment will be provided, if available, and may incur an expense for the presenter.

Presentation Dates, Times and Rooms

The meeting rooms and presentation time schedule will be published in the "Program with Abstracts" issue of the Proceedings (vol. 36, part 1), which will be provided to all meeting registrants at registration. The schedule, which shows the days, times and locations of presentations will be available for download from this and from the AAAS Pacific Division homepage no later than 1 June 2017.


Poster Sessions

Each poster will be assigned a display space of 48" H x48" W (roughly 1.2 m x 1.2 m). Posters will be grouped by discipline and subject matter. Each presenter will be given at least two hours for poster display, although more time may be available. Presenters should set up their posters no later than 15 minutes before the beginning of their presentation session and are expected to be available to discuss their work while their poster is on display. Posters should be removed within 15 minutes of the close of the session. Student posters will be judged for Awards of Excellence. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that students be available for questions until all of the judges have seen their posters.

The AAAS Pacific Division is pleased to offer a number of programs to encourage students to attend its annual meetings and to help further their career goals. These include:

for students presenting their original research at an annual meeting:

    • complimentary ticket to the divisional banquet upon request (student awards are announced at this event)
    • sectional and divisional awards for excellence in student research presentations at the meeting, which include

Teachers, K - 14

The AAAS Pacific Division strives to offer symposia and workshops specifically organized to meet teachers' classroom needs and to introduce them to new and exciting materials and techniques. Teachers K–12 and Community College who plan to attend the meetings may pre-register at a reduced rate. There are also a limited number of $75 stipends available to K – 14 teachers that pre-register for the meeting and request the stipend on their Early Registration form.

The Division’s Science and Technology Education Section seeks teachers' participation in its sessions to share their knowledge and innovative methodologies with colleagues. To this end, contributed paper and poster sessions are being planned. Teachers attending the annual meeting can receive, upon request, a certificate of attendance from the Pacific Division.
